1963:head Senator Hugh Shearer, of the Jamaican mission to the United States, leaves Jamaica for New York where he is scheduled to present Jamaica’s views on international affairs. One of the subjects to be discussed at this session of the United Nations is a proposal made by Shearer when he addressed the assembly for the first time in 1962. It is the declaration of a Year of Human Rights and Shearer ask the assembly to designate 1968 as the “International Year of Human Rights. This is accepted by the Secretary General U. Thant and agreed by the Steering Committee of the current session of the United Nations. 1983:development A contract for the of a Family Life Education and Primary Health Care project for the youth in Duhaney Park, St Andrew, and surrounding communities, is signed at the Ministry of Youth and Community Development, Kingston Mall. Funded by a US $351,000 grant from the United Nations Fund for Population Activities (UNFPA), the project will benefit youth in the Duhaney Park, Washington Gardens, Cooreville Gardens, Patrick City, Forrest Hill Gardens, Riverton City, New Haven and Meadowbrook Estate areas of the Corporate Area. The contract is signed by Minister of Youth and Community Development, Frrol Anderson, and Mr G L. Monekosso, the representative of the Pan American Health Organization World Health Organization in Jamaica, with Brenda McSweeney, representing UNFPA, as witness. 1992:636 Approximately 113, kg (250,000Ibs) of yam are now being fumigated per month for export to the lucrative United States market, Minister of Agriculture Seymour Mullings says. He expresses satisfaction at the increasing demand for fumigation services for local yam and thyme, which has to be fumigated before being allowed into the United States market.
