Students benefit from Rotary Club golf tournament
SEVEN STUDENTS who attend the University of the West Indies (UWI), Westwood High, St Andrew High, Merl Grove Hgh and Mannings Hill schools in Kingston; the Bethel Academy in May Pen and St Mary’s College in St Mary have been awarded a total of $245,000 by the Education Foundation of the Rotary Club of St Andrew North towards books, school fees, boarding and transport expenses. The awardees were referred to the foundation by members of the Rotary Club of St Andrew North, who are aware of the needs of these students.
The total amount represents part proceeds from the Rotary Club of St Andrew North Education Foundation’s inaugural golf tournament, which was held on June 18 this year at the Caymanas Golf and Country Club.
According to Donald Patterson, past president of the Rotary Club of St Andrew North and director of the Club’s Education Foundation, “This amount represents a 100 per cent increase in grants compared to the average amounts disbursed over the past 21 years.”
He expressed appreciation to all the players who participated in the golf tournament, members of the Rotary Club of St Andrew North who volunteered their time, and the various major corporate sponsors, such as Sports Development Foundation, Sagicor Jamaica, JN Fund Managers, Jamaica Automobile Association, The Best Dressed Chicken, Allied Protection, Breezes Bahamas, C&WJ Credit Union, GraceKennedy, Yello, Hi-Pro Ace Supercentre, tTECH and The Jamaica Pegasus hotel.
“Among this group of awardees are potential leaders, many of whom have already proven their abilities, and we look forward to these contributions making it a little easier for the families and students in their pursuit of higher education,” said Patterson.
