The following events took place on September 26 in the years identified:
1979 Henry Lowe, vice :principal of the College of Arts, Science and Technology (CAST), is appointed director of energy in the Ministry of Mining and Natural Resources, on a two-year secondment from his substantive post. Lowe will be responsible for energy planning and coordination in the Energy Division. One of his main tasks will be to ensure that the national energy policy, is being implemented, and that national energy research development and innovation are in a manner consistent with the energy policy, an official news release says. A distinguished Jamaican scientist, Lowe received his bachelor’s degree in natural science from the University of the West Indies in 1963 after attending Calabar high and Excelsior high schools. He subsequently gained the master of science degree from Sydney University, Australia, and was awarded the doctor of philosophy degree by Manchester University, England.
1980 :appoints The Government a task force to study alternative sources of energy, and specifically the possible conversion from oil to coal as a source of energy for the Jamaica Public Service Company and the Caribbean Cement Company. Prime Minister Michael Manley makes the announcement at a press conference at Jamaica House. He names Barclay Ewart, chairman of the Jamaica Industrial Development Corporation and Managing Director of both Tanners Limited and Industrial Chemicals and Alkali Limited as the chairman of the task force. The other members are Mayer Matalon, chairman of the ICD Group of Companies; Winston Hay, managing director of the Jamaica Public Service Company; Henry Lowe, director of energy in the Ministry of Mining; and Bill Saunders, managing director of the Petroleum Corporation of Jamaica. 1997:Hockey The Jamaica Women’s
