WEARING COSTUMES of black satin character sketches depicting the ‘wrath of God’, one of Jamaica’s leading contemporary dance companies, Movements, opened the muchtouted World Travel Awards (WTA) Latin America and the Caribbean at Sandals Montego Bay last Saturday night.

The dance piece, crafted by renowned choreographer Christopher Huggins, is one of the signature pieces from Movements’ varied repertoire, performed in their New York tour earlier this year. And like the response overseas, they received rave reviews from the WTA audience.

In fact, clothed in a huge, swirling white satin cape, administering the wrath, their performance was the start to an evening of excellence, not only for the hoteliers, attractions, airlines, tour operators and travel agencies named the ‘best of the best’ in the tourist industry, but the créme de la créme in entertainment.

The richly talented Jamaica Philharmonic Orchestra, the indomitable jazz and blues performer Phylea Carley, singer extraordinaire Michael David, and former lead of Byron Lee and the Dragonnaires Ashley Martin did Jamaica proud as they had guests dancing in their seats.

At the end of the evening, Jamaica remained the leading Caribbean destination for land-based visitors and cruise-ship passengers, while Sandals Resorts International copped the most awards and newcomers Melia Braco Village and Jewel Grande Montego Bay revelled in their newfound glory.
