GasPro awards high-performing Rockfort GSAT scholars
SIX STUDENTS from the Rockfort area in St Andrew were rewarded for their excellent performance in the Grade Six Achievement Test (GSAT) with scholarships from Massy Gas Products Jamaica Limited (GasPro).
The students, along with nine others who retained their scholarships, were fêted in a ceremony at the Gas Pro headquarters in St Andrew last Friday.
The six GSAT high achievers were the top students from Windward Road Primary and Junior High School, Norman Gardens All Age and Rennock Lodge All-Age, which are all located in areas surrounding GasPro’s headquarters.
They were awarded scholarships valued at $50,000 to assist with their expenses incurred during the academic year. The scholarship will be given for each academic year for the five years of the child’s secondary education, provided a B+ average and good behaviour are maintained
For mother of seven, Kim Edwards, the scholarship is an answer to her prayers, as it proved significant to her daughter Hilisa James, who recently enrolled at Dunoon Technical High School.
“Hilisa lives with her grandmother and uncle, but to offer financial assistance with the school matters are my responsibilities even though she doesn’t live with me. I am currently unemployed, so the scholarship helps out a lot because I will use it to get her books, pay her school fee, and to take care of her uniforms,” Edwards said.
Five-time recipient of the scholarship Deshaun Brandford also echoed Edward’s sentiments, stating that it has been critical to his continued success at Campion College.
“My mother is a single parent, so every year it has been helpful because it has made life much easier for her, since she doesn’t have to consider all of the costs each year,” Brandford explained.
According to Chief Executive Officer of Massy Gas Products Rohan Ambersley, his company recognises education as an important investment and believes that a corporate organisation should not just focus on making profit, but also fulfilling a purpose.
