1950:the By orders published in Jamaica Gazette, new postage rates recently announced as coming in force on October 2, to provide additional revenue for the Government will be put into effect as from that date. This order covers not only the rates recently announced for inland letters, newsprint and parcels; most important, it raises the fee on ordinary letters from penny-halfpenny to two pence and on registered local letters from 3d to 4d, but make new rates for foreign letter and parcel post destinations all over the world. Part of the revenue accruing from these increased rates will go to meet increased service and carriage changes, and part will accrue to general revenue to meet new proposed commitments by the Government. 1990:College The Saint George’s school community and the Jesuits (Society of Jesus) have their anniversary year Mass in the college auditorium. The Mass is in celebration to mark the beginning of 140 years of educational activity at St George’s College; 450 years of the presence of the Society of Jesus in Jamaica; and 500 years to mark the life of the founder, St Ignatius Loyola. The chief celebrant is Martin Schades, who also delivers the homily. A communion service follows. An altar is designed in the school’s auditorium which is beautifully decorated with hellconias and anthuriums and other plants. A large wooden crucifix hangs suspended from the ceiling over the altar.
