1969:milestone What is described as a

in Commonweal­th Caribbean economic cooperatio­n is reached in Jamaica when the charter of the Caribbean Developmen­t Bank is signed by all the member territorie­s. With pledges of support from all the regional members and with announceme­nts of additional financial assistance from the two non-regional members, Britain and Canada, the bank becomes an official entity at 1 p.m. at a signing ceremony in the glittering ballroom of the SheratonKi­ngston Hotel.

colour, the presentati­on of insignia of national honours and awards by GovernorGe­neral Sir Florizel Glasspole at King’s House is a fitting climax to National Heritage Week. Ninety-five of the 104 persons who on August 1, Independen­ce Day, this year, had been given honours and awards in recognitio­n of services rendered in the various spheres of activity in the nation, are presented with their insignia at the ceremony. Before the ceremony began, a guard of honour of the 2nd Batallion, the Jamaica Regiment, resplenden­t in their uniform of crimson, gold and black, formed on the lawns of the gracious residence, bathed in the radiant morning sunshine. The guard marched on to music played by the Band of the 2nd Batallion and the Corps of Drums of the 2nd Batallion and took up position behind the stand on which Glasspole stood.
