We must take our chances – Thomas

Wolmer’s hoping to score more and seal quarter-final spot

ALEX THOMAS, coach of Wolmer’s Boys’ School, is hoping that his strikers will do a better job at capitalising on the chances that are being created in midfield when they take on Denham Town High School in their return leg of their ISSA/Digicel Manning Cup second-round tie at 1:00 p.m. at the Stadium East field.

The boys from Heroes Circle won the first leg 1-0 on Tuesday, and while Thomas is pleased to have come away with the three points, the former national junior representative admitted to The Gleaner that his strikers could have secured a more comfortable lead coming into the return leg.

“All season, we have been struggling with capitalising on our chances, and I agree we could have scored more than the one goal, but we got the three points, and that is all that matters at this stage of the competition,” Thomas said.

Wolmer’s have netted 27 times this season, but Thomas thinks they could have racked up over 40 goals if they were more clinical in front of goal.

He said he and his coaching staff have been working on improving their ruthlessness in front of goal and he expects much better finishing today.

“We have been working on it (finishing), and I have faith that the boys will deliver,” he said.

According to Thomas, credit must also be given to the

Denham Town team as they are a well coached team.

“We didn’t know much about this Denham Town team, but they are well coached and credit must be given to them,” Thomas said.

Denham Town were undefeated before Tuesday’s encounter with Wolmer’s as they tallied 26 points in the first round of the competition but only managed to score a mere 23 times.

If Denham Town are to advance to the quarter-finals, they will have to win by at least two goals, a feat they have only managed to accomplish four out of the 11 times they have played this season.
