1973:sugar A six-point plan by the Industry and the Government acting together to restore Jamaican sugar production to 450,000 tons year within the next three years is announced in Mandeville by Minister of Industry, Commerce and Tourism PJ Patterson. Guest speaker at the formal opening of the Jamaica Associatio­n of Sugar Technologi­sts’, annual conference, held in the Belair Hotel, Patterson, tells his audience that the restoratio­n is indispensa­ble to the island’s standing in a good position in market negotiatio­ns for sugar either now proceeding or else in early prospect. One of these negotiatio­ns is identified as that proceeding in Brussels for the accommodat­ion of Commonweal­th, including Jamaican sugar within the enlarged European Economic Community.

1980:attorney-at-law Winston Spaulding, and the successful Jamaica Labour Party candidate in East Central St James in the general election, is named as attorney general by Prime Minister Edward Seaga. Spaulding will be sworn in by Governor General Florizel Glasspole at King’s House as will members of the Cabine,t who will be announced today. Prime Minister Seaga announces the appointmen­t at the same time that he announces that he had advised the governor general to appoint Ronald Irvine and Bruce Golding as members of the Senate. Irvine is chairman of the Jamaica Labour Party and was leader of Opposition Business in the last Senate. The new attorney general is the younger brother of former Minister of Constructi­on, Anthony Spaulding and has been opposition spokesman on national security since 1976.
