Petersfield dump St James from Ben Francis Cup

A CLINICAL performance from Petersfield High School saw them advance to the semi-finals of the ISSA WATA Ben Francis Knockout Cup, following their 40 thrashing of former champions St James High School at Jarrett Park yesterday.

In another game at Dinthill playing field. Favourites, Charlemont also won 4-0 over Maggotty.

Coach of Petersfield Maurice Duncan said preparation was key as their execution was on point.

“It was all about planning, we planned for this, and it was effective. Knowing that it’s a knockout game, we came here to score. We did score two in the first half, and we know they would have to come out rushing the second half so we capitalised on that by scoring again. From there we knew it would be hard for them to come back... we did our job and that’s just it,” said Duncan.

Rual Miller converted from the penalty spot to give Petersfield the lead in the 16th minute. Things went from bad to worse for St James after two own goals by goalkeeper Wanqueo Gordon (31st) and defender Lloyd Bryan (67) saw their deficit extend to three. Substitute Shewayne Barton put the icing on the cake for the Westmoreland-based team in the 72nd minute.

NOT LOOKING TOO FAR

Duncan believes that winning the Ben Francis would mean a lot to the school and to him personally but said they are not looking too far as yet, as they have to focus on the semi-finals.

“It would mean a lot to the guys and also me as a coach, as I’ve never made it this far either, so we are preparing for it. We faulted in the daCosta Cup although we have some quality that could have put us in the semi-finals. We are now in this one (Ben Francis), so we are going hard for it,” he added.
