Purcess Wright has all the love for special-needs children
MANDEVILLE, Manchester: FOR SIX years, Purcess Wright has worked in an environment that has not only changed her outlook on children with special needs, but has afforded her the opportunity to show them love she only thought she had for her offspring.
Her job at the Windsor School of Special Education, May Pen Learning Centre, has given her an opportunity to find her true purpose: showing kindness and helping those who need it the most.
“I have never worked in an environment with children who have special needs before, but it is something I have come to love, and I don’t regret it one bit.”
She said that to the children, she is a mother, sister, aunt, and friend.
“I treat them just like my child: I don’t treat them any different, and I take good care of them. Sometimes they give a lot of trouble, but you have to know how to work with them.”
Wright admitted that the children could cause one to be confused at times, but meeting them at their level always helped.
“Sometimes they will come and scream at you, and you question them and they run away. But you can’t – and you shouldn’t – get mad at them. All you need to do is let them know you understand their expressions, even the ones they don’t understand themselves.”
PRECIOUS GIFTS
She continued: “I don’t understand why parents leave children, just abandon them. Whether they have a disability or not, they are precious gifts, with so much love and so much to accept love. Children need us to stick to them as much as possible; we brought them here and we should be present in their lives for as long as possible.”
Wright added that adults often jeopardised the trust children have in them by going against their word, but she maintains that children are more knowledgeable than they think.
“If they tell you something, don’t treat it as if it is minor; it could be very important to them. Just treat them well and respect them because they deserve respect and they will in turn respect you,” she ended.
