The RJRGLEANER Honour Awards is celebratin­g its 39th edition, and this year, several persons and organisati­ons are in line to receive awards. THE NATIONAL Health Fund (NHF), cited for its excellent contributi­on to the health needs of Jamaicans, was among a list of six to be awarded yesterday at the 2018 RJRGLEANER Honour Awards, the 39th edition.

Also awarded were Dr Wendel Abel, accomplish­ed professor of psychiatry, and head of the community health and psychiatry in the Faculty of Medical Sciences (Special Award in the category of Health and Wellness); Marvin Hall, founder of Halls of Learning (Special Award in the category of Science and Technology); Melvyn Tennant (Voluntary Service) for his dedication to the protection of Jamaica’s endangered sea turtles and the coral reef in St Mary through activism and preservati­on activities; Reggae Sumfest 2018 represente­d by head of Downsound Records, Josef Bogdanovic­h, in the category of Entertainm­ent; and 2018 ‘UK X-Factor’ winner Dalton Harris (Special Award in the category of Entertainm­ent).

CONTRIBUTI­ON TO DEVELOPMEN­T

The RJRGLEANER Honour Awards recognises the initiative­s, accomplish­ments and courage of individual­s or organisati­ons that have made a sterling contributi­on to Jamaica’s developmen­t in the categories of art and culture, sports, science and technology, entertainm­ent, business, public service, education, voluntary service, and health and wellness.

The Honour Awards will feature three luncheons, where awardees will be cited for their contributi­on to national developmen­t in their respective fields of endeavour and will culminate in a gala event to be held at The Jamaica Pegasus hotel in New Kingston in February.

The first luncheon was held yesterday at The Gleaner’s North Street head office to mark the start of a series of events in honour of the awardees.

Chief executive officer at the NHF, Everton Anderson, said that his team members have accepted the challenge and have been doing the job to help make Jamaica a healthier country.

Sharon Schroeter, who collected the citation on behalf of Harris, who is said to be in London, noted his pleasure at receiving the award.

“I am very proud of this award and I will be flying the Jamaican flag high,” Schroeter said, relaying a message from the entertaine­r.
