Westmoreland schools rewarded for quiz success
WESTMORELAND SCHOOLS Mount Airy All-Age and Broughton Primary were both recognised for their respective performances and achievements in the Television Jamaica (TVJ) 2018 Junior Schools’ Challenge Quiz and the inaugural Tourism Product Development Company (TPDCo) Tourism Schools’ Challenge Quiz at a recent reception in Negril.
The two schools were the finalists in TVJ’s Junior Schools’ Challenge Quiz competition, which Mount Airy won. Broughton Primary emerged champions in the Tourism Quiz Competition.
The reception, which was staged by the TPDCo, Ministry of Tourism, saw teachers and students being showered with praise by industry officials.
“For two rural schools to end up being one and two in a national quiz competition is a big thing, and an even bigger thing is the fact that both of them are from Westmoreland,” said Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett, who spoke at the event.
Bartlett said the achievement of the two schools should inspire others.
“We have benefited from it (the achievement of both schools) because it has enabled us to see the potential that lies within our very midst,” said Bartlett. “We have benefited from it because it gives us a sense of what more we can do, and how much further we can go if we apply ourselves and utilise our resources well, and if we use time more profitably and more efficiently.”
While pointing out that he has roots in Westmoreland, Bartlett said that he was proud that the parish had shown that it has the ability to lead from the front.
“I want to congratulate the teachers of both schools who have worked assiduously with the students. This has shown that teachers across Jamaica continue to be the bedrock of the future of the Jamaican society,” said Bartlett.
