Bickersteth Church changing lives

IN THE year 2000, the Bickersteth Church of God of Prophecy embarked on a major expansion of their church building. Today, Bishop Rupert Brown, pastor, and his members feel a great sense of accomplishment, having hosted a dedication service of a new and expanded structure recently.

Brown admitted that the process involved many highs and lows but quickly noted that with the help of God and support from members, they have been able to enhance their place of worship, which will serve both the church and community.

“The task was very challenging, and because of scarce financial resources, it took us approximately 18 years to arrive at where we are. Our spirit and the will to achieve our goal were undaunted. To date, we have established a computer skills-training and homework centre for the community members, and we are currently in the process of constructing a building for Children’s Church,” he said.

PERSEVERANCE

“The construction of a building is hard work. There were times when I felt like giving up, but because of a strong support base from members of our congregation, and also community members, we persevered, and we came out victorious,” he continued.

The pastor said the structure that existed then was very small and unable to meet all the needs of its members and the community, as well as the influx of persons who he envisioned would be attending church. Guided by the Holy Spirit, he indicated that the church established a vision and mission statement, which have served as an inspiration to push above the challenges.

“With these in mind, the church motivated to take upon ourselves the task of preparing this place of worship for members of the community to worship God and host weddings and funeral services. Albeit slowly, we progressed, but today, we can say ‘Hitherto has the Lord helped us. ’ We’ve seen tremendous growth over the years,” he said.
