Star-studded Milo Western Relays on today

AGALAXY of stars has been entered to compete at the 41st Milo Western Relays at the G.C. Foster College of Physical Education and Sport today at 10:00 a.m.

Meet director Ray Harvey says that many of Jamaica’s top athletes are down to compete at the meet, with some using it to open their season. The event was moved to G.C. Foster College because the track at the Montego Bay Sports Complex in Catherine Hall, St James, is considered unfit for competitio­n.

Harvey said that the starting list shows Shelly-Ann FraserPryc­e, Elaine Thompson, Asafa Powell, Nesta Carter, Shericka Jackson, Janieve Russell, Sashalee Forbes, Natasha Morrison, Julian Forte, Jevaughn Minzie, Andrew Fisher, Oshane Bailey, Stephenie Ann McPherson, Christine Day, Anastasia Le-Roy, Sonikqua Walker, and many others.

Harvey was very pleased with the line-up of senior athletes who were registered to compete at the meet.

He also said that many top high schools will also be gracing the track as well. These include Kingston College, Jamaica College, St Jago High School, Edwin Allen High School, Petersfiel­d High School, St Elizabeth Technical High School, Green Island High School, Holmwood Technical High School, and Herbert Morrison Technical High School.

The meet will also see many preparator­y and primary schools from western Jamaica on show in their various relays.

About 2,000 athletes from primary, prep, and secondary schools; clubs and institutio­ns, including the MVP Track Club, G.C. Foster College, Sprintec Track Club, University of Technology, University of The West Indies, and Montego Bay Comets will descend on G.C. Foster College.

The first event on the track will be 1500m for women followed by the 3000m for men. The hurdles for all classes will take over then the 800m, 100m and the 400m for men and women open. At 1 p.m., it will be all about the relays until 6 p.m.

The two field events (Long Jump and High Jump) on the schedule will take place between 12:30 p.m and 3:30 p.m. The top four finishers of the 4x800m, 4x400m, and the 4x100m Class One for high school girls and boys will attract prize money to the tune of $390,000.The short opening ceremony at 3:00 p.m. will see the recognitio­n of the two Gleaner

Youth Link Awardees as well as the meet patron.

The awardees are Antonio Watson and Shaquena Foote of Petersfiel­d while their coach Machel Woolery is the meet patron.
