Davis to open season at Milo Western Relays

-

Raymond Graham/Gleaner Writer IT SHOULD be excitement galore today at the G.C. Foster College of Physical Education and Sport as the Spanish Town-based institution will be the host of today’s 41st staging of the Milo Western Relays. The event was moved to St Catherine after a switch from the Montego Bay Sports Complex due to renovation work on the running track. The event will be held for the second time at this venue after doing so in 2010.

Today’s event will see 22 individual and 32 relay events and will kick off at 10:00 a.m. with the running of the Women’s 1500m and close at 5:52 p.m. with the Men’s 4x400m relay for Clubs and Institutions. Meet director Ray Harvey says that over 90 teams have been entered, and despite the change of venue, he is expecting the same support as usual.

“We have received around the same amount of entries like last year, and we are hoping that the people from the surrounding area give the same kind of support like we normally get in western Jamaica,” he said. “We are happy to have back St Jago Girls at the meet and Jamaica College, and both teams should help to add more excitement among high school teams as Edwin Allen and Holmwood among the girls will be there. Jamaica College will ensure that Kingston College, who have dominated the meet over the years, are kept on their toes.”

SEASON DEBUT

After dominating the meet for years, all eyes will be on Edwin Allen High School, where super girl Kevona Davis will make her season debut in the Class Two Girls 4x100m.

The Michael Dyke-coached team will be hoping for a sweep in the sprint relays, where their Class Two quartet, which includes the two fastest schoolgirls this season in twin sisters Tia and Tina Clayton, will be gunning for another sub 45 seconds after starting the season with a blazing 44.83 seconds at the Central Hurdles and Relay meet at the same venue.

After doing five times last season sub-44.6 seconds, they look likely here, and they will definitely be pushed by a strong St Jago quartet. St Jago could surprise them in the Class Four event, while a strong Holmwood team could steal the show in Class One.

Petersfield, led by Antonio Watson, look set to upstage Kingston College after coming a very close second a year ago, while the Boy’s Open 4x800m should see a mega clash between Jamaica College and Kingston College.
