Back on track!
THE ONGOING miraculous recovery of athlete Micheal Campbell will step up with him making his competitive return to the track today at the Milo Western Relays set for the GC Foster College of Physical Education and Sport.
The University of Technology, Jamaica (UTech) student, who had his brightest moment so far when he ran a leg of the 4x400m relays at the IAAF World Championships in London in 2017, suffered a severe back injury in a car accident on Hope Road on September 10, 2017. His close friend, Jordon Scott, who was driving, died.
“I will be competing for UTech in the 4x100m,” Campbell confirmed with The Gleaner yesterday.
“It has been a long while since I have been competitive on the track, and I am really, really anxious, but eager, for the competition,” he said.
The former May Day All-Age and Jamaica College student who had previously declared his intention of competing at September’s World Championships in Qatar, and the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, is viewing this event as a test.
NO EXPECTATIONS
“Being back on the track now, I am not going out there with expectations. I am going out there to help my team win. That is the objective for now.
“This is like a test, just a test seeing where I am, like getting rid of the cobwebs. I will assess after this and will be in a position to say what my expectations are,” Campbell said.
The 22-year-old Campbell returned to the track for the first time on September 24 after having his spine surgically repaired.
