- – GLEANER ARCHIVES

The following events took place on February 9 in the years identified:

1945:be Rice imports are to suspended until July in order to give encouragement to domestic rice production. This is announced by the food controller, Mr G.G. R. Sharp. No controlled price will be fixed for local rice, but it is expected that good supplies of local rice, and the certainty that imported supplies will be quickly available if necessary, should discourage hoarders and profiteers.

1945:that In spite of the fact it is reported that the competent authority promised a larger import quota of dry goods to wholesalers, the indications are that there will be no immediate improvement in the local dry-goods situation because of shipping difficulties. It remains to be seen what steps will be taken by the Government to relieve the situation.

1962:entomologist Randall K. Latta, on the staff of the United States AID Mission in Jamaica, completes a study of the problem of plant nematodes in Jamaica. An announcement of the successful completion of this study under the technical-aid programme to the Ministry of Agriculture and Lands is contained in a release from the United States Information Service. 1990:Today

marks one year since the Government’s election to office, and Michael Manley, prime, minister, will be a special guest of Mrs June Hines, moderator of the JBC’s call-in programme, ‘The Public Eye’.
