- Sunday Gleaner Writer Raymond Graham

EDWIN ALLEN High’s girls were in sparkling form at yesterday’s Milo Western Relays held at the GC Foster College in St Catherine.

They swept all the sprint relays with Class Two athlete Kevona Davis, in her first run this season, running a brilliant second leg for her team in a record-breaking run of 43.94 seconds.

The Michael Dyke-coached quartet of Brandy Hall, Davis, Salecia Myles, and Bethany Bridge erased their 2012 mark of 45.00 seconds and also became the first Class Two girls’ team to go under 44 seconds for the sprint relay.

Davis, one of the island’s top junior sprinters, was delighted with her run.

“I am very pleased with my performance. We came out to win and did that, and I am looking forward to the remainder of the season as we can go much faster,” said Davis.

Earlier, Edwin Allen got off to a perfect start as Ishema James, Shantonique McCalla, Xavion Harrison, and Santae Wilson sped to victory in the Class Four 4x100m in 48.64, ahead of Holmwood 49.12 and Manchester High 49.16.

BATON PROBLEMS

Despite baton problems on the first and second exchanges, it was another sub-45 seconds from Edwin Allen in Class Three as Britney Johnson, Tina Clayton, Serena Coke, and Tia Clayton romped to an impressive win in 44.85. Holmwood (47.33) were second and Manchester High third in 47.73.

Edwin Allen’s Class One quartet, Lotavia Brown, Patricia Brown, Fredricka McKenzie, and Avagay Morris closed off the Edwin Allen show in a close win over Holmwood. They won in 45.29, with Holmwood second in 45.37 and Petersfield, third in 45.73.

MVP Track Club, with a blistering second leg from Elaine Thompson, ran a record-breaking 43.23 to retain their title in the women’s 4x100m for clubs and institutions. Other members of the team were Shimarya Williams, Srabandi Nanda, and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce. Sprintec were second in 44.30 while third went to University of Technology in 44.59.

Fraser-Pryce was upbeat after her run.

“I am satisfied with my run. It is early days, and my training has been going well as I am working on specific parts of my race in the 100 metres. I am also taking it a bit slow as it is a very long season,” she said.

Sprintec’s male sprinters gave their home fans a lot to cheer about as they beat off an experienced MVP Club team to walk away with the clubs and institutions 4x100m. MVP, with Nesta Carter on the opening leg and Asafa Powell on anchor, had no answer for the Oshane Bailey-led team as they stopped the clock at 39.21. MVP were second in 39.31, with UTech Jamaica finishing third in 40.15. Andrew Fisher, Chadic Hinds, and Brendon Rodney were the other members of the winning team.

Jamaica College (JC) sent out a very strong message to their rivals after a big run in the high school boys Class One 4x100m as Dillon Henry, Ryem Robertson, Safin Wilks, and Nicholai Everett stopped the clock at 40.12. St Jago were second in 40.26, and Kingston College (KC) took third in 40.48.

JC also took home Class Three in 44.04 , ahead of KC, 44.27. KC captured the Class Two 4x100m 41.94, beating St Jago (42.08) and JC, 42.30.

KC were promoted to first in Class Four with the disqualification of St Jago High. The winning time was 45.57. JC (46.42) and Cornwall (46.82) were second and third, respectively.
