TT boss moving full speed ahead after landslide election win
IT WAS a no-contest in the vote for president at yesterday’s annual general meeting of Table Tennis Jamaica at the University of Technology.
Godfrey Lothian retained the top post with a 72-6 victory over Karen Lyn. The Sunday Gleaner understands that 100 persons registered to vote, but only 81 delegates voted. Three of the ballots were spoiled. After the elections, Lothian said that he would moving full speed ahead in the development of the sport across the island.
“There is no time to waste. We have to hit the ground running because this is what we were elected to do. So we have to answer the call,” Lothian said. “Immediately, what we want to do is ensure that we retrofit Sabina Park’s second floor so that we can have somewhere definite to play. We also want to put a table tennis table in every cricket club across the country. We also want to have age group table tennis from Under-8 to Under-21.” NEW CONSTITUTION
He continued: “We are also going to start community table tennis. The new constitution gives us leverage to form confederations. So five confederations will be formed across the country to ensure that we develop the parish associations, and we want to take the senior team to Guyana in late March-April.
Some members/clubs had written to the president on February 4 requesting that the AGM be postponed as they opposed changes to the constitution. Lothian, however, welcomed opposing voices as he says it speaks to the democracy of the association.
“It was a hard-fought battle involving people with diverse views, but it is not a problem because it shows our democracy, and the best the team will win at the end of the day,” Lothian said.
