CXC names Campion kings of CSEC, CAPE.

CAMPION COLLEGE has been named Jamaica’s top-performing school in the 2018 sitting of the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examinations and the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE).

The announcement was made during the National Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) awards ceremony, which was held at Moneague College in St Ann on Friday, March 22. The ceremony was organised by the Jamaica Association of Principals of Secondary Schools (JAPSS).

Campion College, which is based in Kingston and was founded in 1960, had 80 of its students awarded during the function for turning out excellent performances across CSEC and CAPE. This year marks the 14th time the school has won the CSEC award and their 11th claim on the CAPE top prize.

Grace Baston, principal of Campion College, singled out third-form student Denique Johnson’s exam performance for special commendation, while admitting that the school’s overall accomplishment was not a surprise to her.

“We have a legacy of academic excellence at Campion. Our school population is 1,488, and the majority are performing excellently, and our school entered a total of 320 students, combined, across both exams,” said Baston.

“I am particularly proud of one of my students from the lower school, Denique Johnson, who was first in the island in principles of accounts and who made the Regional Merit List.”

Of the 34,000 students who sat both exams, 30,443 passed with averages of grades one through three. There was also a seven per cent improvement rate in mathematics for 2018 compared to the results for 2017.

JAPPS Vice-President Linvern Wright, who is principal of Rusea’s High School in Hanover, expressed pride in the students’ performance.
