IMPACTING LIVES and improving communities through volunteering is one of the biggest expressions of humanity, kindness and goodwill, as it creates a better society using positive acts of social responsibility. As such, Unicomer (Jamaica) Limited embarked on its goal of changing the world through its fourth annual Volunteer Week activities with four school-improvement projects from March 18-24.

As a company that strongly believes that there are thousands of opportunities to change the world, Unicomer (Jamaica) completed beautification projects at the Glad Tidings Early Childhood Development Centre in Spanish Town, St Catherine; The Bamboo Basic School in St Ann; The Christiana Moravian Primary School in Manchester and The Morant Bay High School in St Thomas.

The first of the week’s projects, the Glad Tidings Early Childhood Development Centresaw the complete gutting and re-surfacing of the playground, creation of a wall mural, installation of a new perimeter fence to enclose and make the play areasafe, painting and restoration of the walls and recreational equipment, donation of playground equipment to include: swings, as well as see saws and a comfortable seating area. The remaining schools received locally made seating areas, each of which were carefully hand painted by our Volunteers and reflect the vibrancy and creativity of the Jamaican spirit.

Hailing the contribution as a necessity, Principal of Glad Tidings, Diane White, says, “As educators, we know that play is vital, as it is used to develop the fine and large motor skills as well as helps in the development of children and their personalities. We believe the project will also be an important step in us being certified by the Early Childhood Commission of Jamaica.”

According to Claudette GordonMcFarlane, Director of Human Capital, “A sound education (to include social skills) is critical for nation building. We are extremely happy to out in the various communities connecting with our people…getting our hands dirty and feeling our hearts literally beating at a different rate. This year, with ‘Volunteer Week’, we aimed to help schools with the much needed resources for their wholistic growth.”

The quality of life and comfort of our customers is an essential part of the Unicomer mission and through our services, products and initiatives, we’re happy to use the opportunity to give back and create constant improvement. Principal of the Bamboo Basic School, Lorraine Johnson-Beckford underscored the necessity of enjoyable seating areas as it relaxes parents and students at the school.

“We’re thrilled to receive a new seating area. As a school community that caters to 92 students, it’s imperative to have child-friendly areas for students, parents and teachers, so this donation will be a welcome addition to our school.”

During the Volunteer Week activities, the initiative saw active participation of volunteers from across the island. Since its start in 2015, Volunteer Week has been executed in 24 countries where the Unicomer Group operates and involves more than 1500 volunteers annually, aiming to help beautify and impact lives of many.
