Reneto Adams, Metry Seaga give police HQ plan thumbs up
NEWS OF plans to build a new police headquarters in No Man’s Land, South St Andrew, has been like music to the ears of security expert and ex-policeman Reneto Adams.
Adams said that the relocation should form the first step in having other state agencies set up shop in the area, creating a vast and new economy and displacing criminal elements.
“As a matter of fact, I am recommending that ministries and prominent government agencies relocate. These are prime lands. This move will bring back some confidence. It will motivate people to carry their business there, and it will motivate every other person who has interest to transact business to return,” Adams said.
Having experience in and knowledge of the area, the retired cop suggested that once relocation becomes a reality, micro-sized businesses would boom.
“People who will benefit are restaurant owners, laundry people, tailors, and shoemakers. Coronation Market and other markets will do more business. As long as it is organised properly, there should be an economic boost for the country.”
Adams described No Man’s Land as a strategic location from which many troubled communities can be easily accessed to “flush out criminals”.
“The citizens will be happy with the relocation because many police formations will be in close proximity. You have a strategic advantage to execute proper policing and planning. When I was in charge of the Crime Management Unit, we used to camp out in the No Man’s Land area that adjoins every other community in that vicinity,” Adams told The Gleaner.
Metry Seaga, owner of Jamaica Fibreglass Products on Spanish Town Road, which is a short distance away from No Man’s Land, hailed the plan as a good idea.
“Moving to the centre of where crime seems to be perpetuated is a good idea and will make the police more in touch with what is happening,” he said. “I think having the headquarters will help to dull the perception out there of crime in and around the area.”
