Parents need to know that The "Lego Movie 2 Videogame" is an open-world style action/adventure game available on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and Windows-based PCs. The game is based on the feature film of the same name, with players loosely following the events of the movie. Themes of friendship, teamwork, and helping others take center stage with players helping out characters by completing requests and missions. Players use a variety of special tools to scan, paint, and build Lego items, using their "Master Builder" skills to overcome obstacles. It's a drastic change from previous Lego games and a more challenging and creative experience. There's a fair amount of cartoonish violence and destruction, but nothing extreme or graphic. Instead, defeated enemies and destroyed objects simply break apart into Lego bits before vanishing from the screen.
WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
In "The Lego Movie 2 Videogame," everything's no longer awesome. It’s been years since the invasion of the alien Duplo army at the end of "The Lego Movie." Bricksburg has been left in rubble, replaced by a postapocalyptic wasteland appropriately dubbed Apocalypseburg. While the rest of the Lego residents adjust to this new life, Emmet still holds out hope that everything can still be awesome once again. But after the Duplo army returns and abducts Lucy, Batman, and the rest of his friends, it falls to Emmet to travel through the Systar System, save his friends, and defeat the Duplos for good.
IS IT ANY GOOD?
"The Lego Movie 2 Videogame" is an adventure that challenge you to tap into your inner Master Builder like never before. The gameplay ditches the usual linear mission-based action of previous Lego titles in favor of a more open-world style that gives players the freedom to follow their own paths and to build their own creations. The game still keeps a lot of the arcade action and platforming elements, but adds extra tools and skills that allow players to collect and manipulate Lego bricks and pieces, building their own custom content to help Emmet and his friends.
If you’ve played "Lego Worlds" before, you’ll instantly recognize the new elements in "The Lego Movie 2 Videogame." Players use a scanner to add Lego pieces and structures to their inventory, using studs collected through gameplay to unlock scanned items for use. It can take a little extra time to learn how to use the new tools and to navigate the build system, but it’s not too complicated and winds up being a lot of fun. Along the way, there are characters scattered around with requests for players to complete. These missions range from simple collection quests to huge boss battles. The story moves along with cinematic cutscenes as players travel through the Systar System to other worlds. What makes this interesting is how the creative freedom and story elements still manage to fit together to give kids the chance to relive the events of the movie and to have their own unique experience at the same time. Instead of simply watching the story unfold, "The Lego Movie 2 Videogame" lets kids tap into their imagination as a part of the story and feel like a true Master Builder in the process.
