Word Swipe Puzzle

Clever, simple word game is fun for all ages

- By Paul Semel, Common Sense Media

Parents need to know that "Word Swipe Puzzle" is a word-based puzzle game for iOS and Android devices. Using simple touch controls, players have to connect blocks with letters on them to form the words indicated by a clue. As players complete words, they earn gold coins and keys. This currency can then be used to buy helpful items, including hints or a shuffling of letters. Doing so removes those letters from the playing field, hopefully revealing the next word you need to swipe. Players can also earn in-game currency by watching optional video ads or by buying it in the game's store. There are also static ads along the bottom of the screen, but only between rounds, not while you're playing. An ad-free version is also available. Read the developer's privacy policy for details on how your (or your kids') information is collected, used, and shared, and any choices you may have in the matter, and note that privacy policies and terms of service frequently change.

WHAT'S IT ABOUT?

Like most puzzle games, "Word Swipe Puzzle" doesn't have a story. Instead, you have to solve puzzles so you can unlock the next puzzle, and so on. To do this, you have to connect the lettered boxed that form words, but only words that fit the category you've been given. Do this, and the boxes disappear; clear all the boxes and you've solved the puzzle and move onto the next.

IS IT ANY GOOD?

Though you can't play with friends, this word puzzle game will still keep some wordsmiths entertained. In "Word Swipe Puzzle," you're presented with a series of stacked boxes, each of which have a single letter on them. By swiping in a straight line, forward or backward, you form words that fit the category of that particular puzzle. For "Sharp Things," for instance, the correct words were "sword," "saw," "blade," and "sense." Doing so removes those boxes from the playing field until there's none left and you can move on to the next puzzle. There are also power-ups for when you get stuck and need a hint or want to shuffle the boxes, while the categories tell you how many words you're looking for and how many letters it takes to make them. The only issue is that, because some of the words are big, and some of the categories are obscure, this may prove to be a bit too difficult for younger gamers. But if you're an older wordsmith (or a younger one that loves learning new words and phrases), you'll enjoy the intellectual challenge that's "Word Swipe Puzzle."
