THE NATIONAL Youth Orchestra of Jamaica (NYOJ) presents Melodies of Empowerment at Emancipation Park on Sunday.

This concert will feature international guest musicians from the Global Leaders Programme performing alongside talented NYOJ professional instructors and popular Jamaican artistes, who will perform with the orchestra ensuring there is something interesting for everyone to enjoy.

The event will highlight the excelling NYOJ Senior Orchestra, the Junior Orchestra, the String Orchestra and the Symphonic Band. The event provides an outlet for NYOJ’s budding musicians from seven classical music training centres and over 40 participating schools to come together in harmony.

NYOJ’S OBJECTIVE

The NYOJ is a non-profit, non-governmental organisation, driven by its mission to develop youth orchestras in Jamaica using classical music as a tool to inspire, empower and enhance the lives of at-risk youth. Through the provision of structured classical music training and instruction, the programme aims to instil core values such as discipline, perseverance and cooperation, and to foster the emotional and intellectual development of the students.

The NYOJ began operations in 2009 at St Andrew Technical High School and has since expanded to include eight centres throughout the central and eastern regions of the island, operating six days a week with well over 600 students registered from 40 different schools.

During the concert, donations will be accepted to help fund the programme.
