Be aware of migrating criminals
– JN Bank security head
RESIDENTS OF St Elizabeth were cautioned to be more aware of their surroundings and, in particular, criminals who may be migrating from neighbouring parishes such as St James, Hanover and Westmoreland, where a state of emergency (SOE) is now in effect.
The warning came from Michael Powell, head of security for JN Bank. He was addressing members at a recent JN Bank Members’ Mingle in Junction, St Elizabeth, which was held under the theme ’Security and You.’
“There is the need for you to be aware of who is hanging around in your community, especially in St Elizabeth, where people will migrate to, because of the state of emergency [in Westmoreland, Hanover and St James], where a lot of police and soldiers are now located,” he said.
“Therefore, be more aware of the people who are coming around you, and who they are associated with. You can know by the company that these people keep, if
they are of a particular character,” he added.
Powell advised residents to inform the police of any persons who have moved into their space and have aroused suspicion.
THE MIND
The JN Group senior manager underscored that security begins in the mind and, therefore, being aware of what is happening around you and in your surroundings is important.
Giving tips about how to keep safe when walking, Powell advised JN members to avoid walking or parking in shadowed areas, and to always have their keys in hand as they approach their cars.
Turning to safety and security when doing financial transactions, he warned against withdrawing large sums of money; but, if required to do so, to be vigilant.
On personal safety, if attacked, Powell encouraged members to cooperate as much as possible, but also to look for opportunities to disarm and disable the offender.
Carlene Clarke, head of customer experience and service recovery at JN Bank, said that the event was in line with a series of community meetings, themed ‘Creating Safer Spaces for Your Family,’ which were held earlier this year in May Pen, Savanna-la-Mar and Mandeville; and one of two meetings so far which focused on providing practical fighting skills to members. The other event was held in Brown’s Town, St Ann.
USEFUL TIPS
Ronald Allen, a retiree, said that the security tips were relevant and practical. “They were useful tips. When you are out and about, you must always ensure that you are aware of your environment,” he said.
Members also received information from Claudine Allen, JN Group member ombudsman, who highlighted the benefits available to members through
JN Group member companies.
