Teach students financial literacy

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I’M ACTUALLY smiling at the values that I’m seeing in the statutory declaration of Prime Minister Andrew Holness. It warms my heart to know that the leader of our country is financially literate and that he knows how to create wealth.

What concerns me i s that Jamaicans (including myself ) are generally not as financially literate as our beloved PM, and, as such, spend our lives accumulating debt in our lifetimes that even spans generations.

I believe it is time to break this burdensome cycle. Starting with the education system of our country!

Seeing as the prime minister used to be a minister of education, I think he, more than anyone else, should see the sense in what I’m saying. If the school system incorporates teaching financial independence and learning from grades seven to 11, our future will be very bright.

VALUE OF INVESTING

Our youth need to learn about the importance of investing, calculating taxes, assets and liabilities, and so on.

We often hear that education is the key to success, but why is the type of education that will ensure our success not taught to us?

I want the Government, especially the very financially literate prime minister, to take this into consideration.

Our country’s future, our country’s survival, depends on this.
