Snail slime
Current craze in skincare
WHY IS snail slime such a hot commodity? Beauty publications around the world have been reporting on the snail slime phenomenon since it was discovered that these snail secretions were beneficial to human skin. It’s not the molluscs themselves – it’s the slime they discharge that matters. Before you decide to turn away in disgust, you’ll find it interesting to know the reason these mollusc secretions are in such high demand.
While snails are commonly regarded as an agricultural nuisance, researchers have found that the slime (or mucous) they emit is naturally filled with nutritional ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, glycoprotein, proteoglycans, antimicrobial copper peptides, etc.
Anti-ageing elements that help activate formation of collagen and elastin, fight free radicals, restore damaged cells, and restore hydration. Snail slime is used to treat dry skin, signs of ageing, wrinkles, stretch marks, pimples, age spots, burns, scars, razor bumps, and flat warts. That realisation is the driving force behind the evolution of mainstream cosmetic brands like Gold Skin, which in recent years have developed and marketed a complete line of snail
slime-based beauty products with tremendous success. Snails used to produce slime for beauty products are hygienically labgrown, and the mucous is refined. The word about snail slime is out, and the demand for Gold Skin products is in.
SNAIL-SLIME PHENOMENON
The snail-slime phenomenon has been around since the time of ancient Greece. Now it’s the craze in Western societies, too. Asian news publications have reported that following the discovery of the anti-ageing and moisturising properties of snail mucous, at least 80 snail farms have sprung up in Nakhon Nayok Province in Thailand over the past three years. In early July 2019, the main snail slime producer in Thailand was reported to be supplying American cosmetic companies with snail slime in powder form at US$58,200 per kilogram. Compare this with the price of Gold, which at the time was worth US$46,300 per kilogram.
