Thomas cops CWI/WIPA Emerging Player award
JAMAICAN FAST-BOWLER Oshane Thomas was voted West Indies Emerging Player of the Year Monday’s at the 7th Annual Cricket West Indies/West Indies’ Players Association Awards ceremony held in Antigua.
Thomas, who made his One-Day International (ODI) debut for the West Indies in October of last year, has so far claimed 24 wickets in 19 matches at an average of 34.37.
The burly Melbourne Cricket Club speedster, who has also claimed nine wickets in 10 Twenty20 (T20) matches for the West Indies, beat out fellow Jamaican opening batsman John Campbell for the award.
Jamaica’s long-standing groundskeeper at Sabina Park, Charlie Joseph, was named West Indies Groundsman of the Year.
West Indies captain Jason Holder and all-rounder Deandra Dottin were named Player of the Year in the male and female categories, respectively. Holder also took home the Test Player of the Year award, with Dottin having a clean sweep by taking the ODI and T20 women’s Player of the Year titles.
Shai Hope was voted the best ODI player, while Keemo Paul took home the T20 International Player of the Year award. André Russell was voted the Caribbean T20 Player of the Year, while Rahkeem Cornwall was named West Indies Championship Player of the Year.
Yannick Ottley took home the Super 50 Player of the Year award, while Joel Wilson was voted the Umpire of the Year.
