Assisting our Catholic educators

-

THE ARCHDIOCESE of Kingston assists qualified students with their education at tertiary institutions through the Archbishop’s Scholarship Fund. Students who are hoping to have an impact on the future of Jamaica in our Catholic schools and who face a genuine shortfall in resources are encouraged to seek financial support from the fund. It was the wish of the late archbishop Samuel Carter that prospective Catholic teachers did not have to deny themselves the educational opportunity, the ability to help their own families in the future, as well as the ability to adequately serve people through their calling.

This year, six applicants will receive a financial grant towards their tuition for the 2019-2020 academic year as they pursue their studies at the College of Agriculture Science and Education, the Edna Manley School for the Visual and Performing Arts, and St Joseph’s Teachers’ College. Awardees are expected to maintain at least a B+ average and to be actively involved in their church community as well as to commit to 30 hours of community service.

The six young ladies represent church parishes from St Thomas, St Mary, St Andrew, and Kingston. The awardees – Tashi Campbell, Shanleta Edwards, Kashkay Johnson, Shermaine Pearce, Irkah Wilson, and Joedian Walker – were recognised by Archbishop Kenneth Richards on August 14 in the presence of their parish priests, members of the Archdiocesan Education Commission, and other church members. These enthusiastic change agents have made their communities proud.
