JACAP has come of age
THE ESTABLISHMENT of the Jamaica Association of Composers, Authors and Publishers (JACAP) 21 years ago was a historic milestone in the music industry in Jamaica. For the first time, musicians had formal and organised support for the protection of their creative output. Through JACAP’s operations, thousands of Jamaican songwriters of various genres, and musicians can be assured that they will receive royalties due. In the past, we have heard stories of talented writers, composers, and musicians who have died almost penniless because they did not receive adequate compensation for their work.
I commend the trailblazers who had the foresight to establish this important organisation. Although over the years, there have been some pockets of resistance to your efforts by some groups, in recent times there has been more compliance, and with increased public education the negative perception will be reduced. The very persons who resist may one day need your assistance and protection.
In this digital age, where there is an explosion of technological advancement, I am confident that JACAP will maintain its vigilance to protect members, locally and internationally, and “ensure optimum returns and increased economic benefits for the nation equal to the worldwide popularity of Jamaica’s cultural and creative products. Congratulations to all who were recognised at the recent inaugural awards. The celebration of the achievement of your members is an indication that JACAP has come of age. I wish for the association many more years of successful operations as you seek to protect the valuable musical legacy of Jamaicans.
