JACAP now a global heavyweight
AS THE minister of culture and Entertainment and as one of the founding members of JACAP, I am indeed proud of the achievements of this organisation after 21 years.
JACAP has established itself as a global heavyweight able to stand up against any international collective management organisation in the world. Its growth has been nothing short of phenomenal. In 1999, membership stood at 30, while today, JACAP’s membership is just under 400. In 1999, JACAP’s revenue stood at over
$7 million; in 2018 it was $174 million. Cumulative collection up to December 2018, stands at over $1 billion. JACAP’s distribution also continues to score impressive growth.
I must commend the hard-working board and staff of JACAP. In particular, I want to recognise those from the early days – Gussie Clarke, Desmond Young, Steve Golding, Carl Ayton, Lloyd Stanbury, and the late Tony Laing – who saw the vision and worked to make JACAP a reality. Also, kudos to, current general manager, Lydia Rose, who in those early days was the coordinator – pulling the group together to ensure that we achieved our objectives. Jamaica is now positioned for enhanced global competitiveness, increased income for practitioners, and sustainable prosperity for our country. There are many more creatives who need to benefit from JACAP. Let us develop the plan and put in the work to ensure that each creative person in the entertainment space is fairly compensated for his/her work. Congratulations to the esteemed recipients of the inaugural JACAP awards. As the association continues to harness the energy, skill, talent, and business acumen of our music and entertainment industries, you have my full support.
