The Civil Service is key

-

I OFFER this message in recognition of Civil Service Week 2019, presented this year under the theme; ‘Building and Sustaining a Culture of Excellence.’

First, I also want to take this opportunity to salute the important work of the Strategic Human Resources Management Division of the Ministry of Finance and Public Service. The work of this division cannot be overlooked as the nation celebrates the contribution of all our civil servants as you continue to build on the culture of excellence, which has become evident in so many ways through the various other divisions of the Government.

I would also like to once again offer my personal support and encouragement to the staff of the this Division for their dedication in promoting and executing the activities set aside in celebration of Civil Service Week 2019. Often times, the efforts of persons like you are overlooked and considered as part of rudimentary, but without your commitment and devotion, the status quo would persist.

BUILDING A CULTURE OF EXCELLENCE

This year’s focus on building and sustaining a culture of excellence confirms that it is time to build on and sustain the gains made to improve the delivery of services to citizens of Jamaica. Those who are responsible for organising these activities have placed the proper focus on the collective minds and output in creating a better quality of life for all Jamaicans.

As I said previously, the movement towards a better quality of life begins with the delivery of excellence in the public sector. We have witnessed over the years that several divisions within the civil service have taken ownership of its responsibility to provide better customer service in order to increase the prospect of a better Jamaica which for many of us remains the place to live, work and raise families.

I am delighted by your chosen theme because it brings into focus the need to build and sustain a culture of excellence within the public sector.

On behalf of the opposition, I pledge that we will continue to do our part in advancing the cause of a better public sector capable of delivering quality service to the Jamaican people.

I salute the organisers of the Civil Service Week of activities and wish you all the best with your activities.

PETER D. PHILLIPS Leader of the opposition
