Bellefield High School choir
THE BELLEFIELD High School choir, under the guidance of music teacher Andre McLean, Gail Newman, and other supporting staff members, has become renowned among Jamaican high-school choirs and internationally. To date, one of the choir’s major achievements was placing second in the Television Jamaica All Together Sing competition in 2017/2018 academic school year. The success from the competition has brought the choir local fame and numerous invitations to major functions, as well as international recognition from Jamaican reggae artiste Chronixx. The choir was invited to perform at the Prime Ministers Youth Award in December 2017 and National College for Educational Leadership Aspiring principals graduation ceremony in 2018. The success of the choir members has continued throughout the years. The choir reaped success once more when Sashell Clarke entered the World Skills Jingle Competition in 2018 and placed first for her innovative and inspiring piece. The choir and the music department ensured that it was indeed a ‘golden’ 50th anniversary celebration with numerous gold-medal performances from the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission’s Music Competition, where the school received three gold, five silver, and six bronze medals in 2018/2019. Of the three gold-medals performances, one advanced to the national finals – a drum solo entered by Zaire Green. His piece placed first in Jamaica.
