Jamaica Gleaner

Jamaican fast-food heroes, heroines

- PATRICK GALLIMORE pagalley@protonmail.com

THE EDITOR, Madam:

IN A country that has more than half a dozen American fast-food restaurants, the founders of four of Jamaica’s most successful and most enduring local fast food giants should be congratulated and emulated, namely, Vincent Chang (Tastee’s), Thalia Lyn (Island Grill), Carol Clarke (Scoops-Unlimited/Devon House I-Scream) and Adrian Foreman (Mother’s).

The consistency of the quality of food/products and the good customer service emanating from those four leading Jamaican born and bred fast-food chains and, moreover, the latter being able to hold their own in a highly competitive space – and given the many locally based American fast-food giants in existence today – is testament to the power, persistence and passion of Brand Jamaica.

More locally originated fast-food chains need to be encouraged and facilitated (via tax incentives) by the Government of Jamaica and by the citizens of Jamaica, because Tastee’s, Mother’s, Island Grill and Devon House I-Scream are world beaters, in their own rights.

From time to time, one recalls with great fondness, nostalgia and delight, some of Jamaica’s best, locally conceived and locally birthed fast-food chains that existed in a bygone era. During their heyday three, in particular – Creamy Corner, King Burger and Pizza Delite – were local favourites, very popular and, in terms of the taste and the quality of their products, were a cut above many of the American fast-food giants in existence today.

Last, Jamaica is in dire need of more Vincent Changs, more Thalia Lyns, more Carol Clarkes and more Adrian Foremans. Put rand Jamaica first, always.
