Right choice, Biden!

-

TTHE EDITOR, Madam:

ODAY, I learned that former presidential nominee for the White House, Senator Kamala Harris, has been picked by Joe Biden to be his running mate, in essence to be his vice-president should he win the upcoming US November elections. Although Biden had been deliberating for months on the right candidate from a number of contenders, his choice of Kamala was quite strategic for the following reasons.

Former presidential nominee Kamala Harris is the first black and South Asian woman to be chosen to run on a major party’s political ticket. This is welcome news for the Democrats which puts them in a much favourable position to clinch victory in the upcoming elections as she represents both the black and the South Asian vote, as vice-president Joe Biden will definitely need someone from the black and Asian community that will truly represent the black and Hispanic vote.

According to the Pew Research Center, analysis of Census Bureau data research has shown that Asian Americans are the fastest– growing segment of eligible voters of the major racial and ethnic groups in the United States, and they are also the only major or ethnic group which comprises naturalised citizens other than their US-born counterparts which account for the majority of eligible voters. Moreover, her home state of California has more immigrant eligible voters than any other state. Also, the black vote will now increasingly define US politics. The recent George Floyd incident and others in tandem with the revival of the Black Lives Matter movement will be an interesting factor that will be a deciding factor, in my opinion, in the outcome of the elections. The recent Democratic primaries reveal that Joe Biden has a large black following from his victories, especially South Carolina, New York, Alabama, and others. Finally, the former prosecutor has a wealth of experience in law as a former district attorney, prosecutor, and attorney general for her home state, which will serve her quite well. Her recent line of questioning of the Supreme Court nominee justice Judge Brett Kavanaugh is testament to that fact, which was quite impressive.
