Credit union tertiary scholarship recipients
TERESA BROWN, a finalyear student pursing a bachelor’s degree in accounting, is the recipient of the Glen Francis (Credit Union) Scholarship award, and receives $500,000 toward her studies. Second-year University of the West Indies student, Jenieve Richards, is the recipient of the Milburn Corrie Cooperative Scholarship award and also receives $500,000 to fund her bachelor’s degree in management studies.
Teresa and Jenieve are both involved and contributing members of the university community, having been involved in a number of clubs and societies on their halls of residence, namely Sign Language Club, I’m Glad I’m A Girl Foundation and outreach projects, among others. As part of their scholarship commitments, both recipients
have pledged to remain involved in clubs and societies that are civic-minded.
Glen Francis, former group CEO of JCCUL and the man for whom the scholarship was named, presented the award to Teresa Brown, and similarly, Karen Corrie, daughter of the late Milburn Corrie, who served as the registrar of the Department of Co-operative &
the award to Jenieve Richards. Glen Francis shared his honour of having a scholarship penned in his name that will be of great support to the awardee as she pursues her education. Karen Corrie also shared how proud her father would have been to be part of such an amazing
cause and was honoured to see the cooperative movement acknowledge her father’s contribution in this way.
Credit unions have also been continuing their committed support of education through the distribution of scholarships and bursaries to their youth savers this year. Public ceremonies recognising the achievements of the students were forgone, but credit unions devised a method of recognising each student. Here is a look at some of these events.
