Tougher penalty for those committing crime against women

-

THE EDITOR, Madam:

AS A young lady growing up in Jamaica and being involved in a relationship, it pains me deeply to hear about all the killing of our women where majority of the time it is happening domestically. Our women are being threatened but apparently nothing comes out of it when it is reported, and as a result of this most, women don’t even bother to say anything.

I have listened to the news recently where a lady was chopped to death simply because she did not want to have anything to do with a man. But what happens after that? The lady lost her life and left her loved ones behind. I believe that the Government should i mplement tougher penalties for those proven to be guilty.

Majority of these men that commit the crime do not hide after doing it, because it seems as if before carrying out the act they think to themselves and say “all mi ago do ago a jail an come back out”.

They do not care so why should the Government allow them to be locked away for just a couple of years then come back on the street to start a new life or even find another victim.

Families are left to mourn the loss of their mother, sister, aunt, and who knows if they were the breadwinners of their family. They were taken away from them by cruel men who just couldn’t take no for an answer or even being told that the relationship is over.

Is this the life that our future generation of women going to live? Are they going to be forced to stay in a relationship they don’t want just because they are scared to leave? I am pleading to the Government to make an example out of these men so that the others thinking to follow their footsteps gets scared and realise this is not the way to go.
