The following events took place on March 16 in the years identified:
1960: Minister of Finance Vernon Arnett presents a Ministry Paper to the House of Representatives on the setting up of a Public Accounts Committee. Appointment of this committee was demanded by the Opposition in an amendment moved by Deputy Leader of the Opposition Donald Sangster, in the course of his Budget speech.
1970: A declaration that the Agricultural Marketing Corporation is not prepared to take the extremely poor quality produce that many farmers are offering to the organisation is made by Chairman Mr R.K. Aquart. Speaking at the formal opening ceremony of the five-day training course for vegetable farmers in St Ann, at the Social Welfare Centre at The University of the West Indies, Mr Aquart tells his audience of 27 farmers and around 20 farm leaders and technical officers that only good quality produce will be able to sell.
1982: The Daily Gleaner reports that attorney-at-law Maurice Tenn has been elected president of the Rhodes Scholars Association.
1983: Celebrated middleweight boxing champion of the world, ‘Marvelous’ Marvin Hagler, and his wife, Bertha, arrive in Montego Bay for a 10-day stay in Jamaica. Describing his visit as “strictly private, the champion fresh from his victory over Tony Sibson of England, at Worcester, Massachusetts, said: “I have always wanted to visit Jamaica. I am looking forward to enjoying the sunshine, the beach and meeting with the beautiful people of this country.” Hagler is met by C. Lloyd Allen, Dr Herbert Eldemire, Jackie Bell and Devon Smith.
