NURSES ARE SUPERHEROES

- PATSY EDWARDS HENRY President

“On this International Nurses Day, I applaud and congratulate you, nurses of Jamaica, for your dedication and service and for going above and beyond the call of duty. You may not be superheroes in capes flying around, but you are warriors, superheroes in personal protective equipment.

TODAY WE celebrate International Nurses’ Day with nurses around the world, under the theme ‘Nurses: A Voice to Lead A Vision for Future Healthcare’. This theme depicts how putting nurses in positions of influence and power will lead to more people-centred and integrated approaches to healthcare, and consequently, more positive outcomes for the people and communities that nurses serve.

At times, a nurses’ day goes unnoticed as it is overshadowed by the many other activities during the month of May. I encourage every member of the society wherever you are to STOP!! BIG UP OR GIVE A SHOUT OUT to nurses and congratulate them for their work. Everyone has, at some point in their life cycle, been touched by a nurse, as nurses are the ones who are there when you take your first and last breath. The nurse is with families at their most vulnerable times, whether it is holding the hand of a screaming mother as she gives birth to her firstborn or gently ushering a lonely soul to the afterlife as he takes his last breath. Often, the negatives are highlighted, but today, think of the positives.

Nurses have, for the past year, sacrificed self, time, family, and many special moments to care for the populace throughout this dreadful pandemic. The successful roll-out of the vaccination programme was as a result of nurses across the island pooling their energy and resources to ensure that over 80,000 vaccines were delivered in just five days.

On this International Nurses Day, I applaud and congratulate you, nurses of Jamaica, for your dedication and service and for going above and beyond the call of duty. You may not be superheroes in capes flying around, but you are warriors, superheroes in personal protective equipment.

HAPPY INTERNATIONAL NURSES’ DAY!!!
