NURSING INNOVATION in the face of an unprecedented global health crisis will be the focus of International Nurses’ Day 2021, it has been announced.

The International Council of Nurses (ICN) is searching for nurses across the world who are taking the lead on service redesign or new ways of working to act as case studies for next year’s campaign.

“In 2021, we will focus on the changes to and innovations in nursing and how this will ultimately shape the future of healthcare.” – Annette Kennedy

The ICN hosts International Nurses’ Day each year on May 12 to mark the anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth and to celebrate the achievements of the nursing profession.

In the wake of COVID-19, health and care services have been forced into an abrupt and major transformation and the ICN says that in many cases, nurses have been ‘leading this revolution’.

The 2021 International Nurses’ Day will seek to highlight the ways nurses are innovating and will also explore what nursing may look like in the future.

The theme of next year’s campaign has been titled “A Voice to Lead - A Vision for Future Healthcare”.

ICN president Annette Kennedy (pictured above) said: “The global COVID-19 pandemic has shown the world the important role that nurses play in keeping people healthy across the lifespan. While there has been significant disruption to healthcare, there has also been significant innovation that has improved access to care.

“In 2021, we will focus on the changes to and innovations in nursing and how this will, ultimately, shape the future of healthcare.

“We can only achieve this vision of future healthcare by generating new policies that pave the way for this sea change.” – Howard Catton

Meanwhile, Howard Catton, ICN chief executive, says that the pandemic has opened up an opportunity to “call for a reset” and “explore new models of care where nurses are at the centre of our health systems”.

“We can only achieve this vision of future healthcare by generating new policies that pave the way for this sea change, and that is another key area IND2021 will seek to focus on.”

The ICN is calling on nurses to share their stories in the form of a case study, which will be part of its International Nurses’ Day 2021 resources.

Submissions and any questions should be sent to indstories@icn.ch.
