Digicel doing it DIGITALLY for Jamaica’s development

-

DIGICEL IS proud to join the international community in celebrating World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD 2021). Today, we reflect on how Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) have reshaped the world. We also recognise the pivotal role ICTs play in the continuation and proliferation of knowledge-based societies and sustainable socio-economic development, especially for Small Island Developing States (SIDs) like Jamaica.

When families, businesses, and countries were faced with the unprecedented strictures and realities of the global COVID-19 pandemic, it was the global ICT industry that stepped to the plate and provided avenues to maintain societal functions, continue economic activity, sustain education, and help facilitate one of the most basic of human necessities – human connection.

The WTISD 2021 theme of ‘Accelerating Digital Transformation in challenging times’ is particularly relevant to Jamaica’s ongoing work to create an efficient and resilient ICT infrastructure. This underpins the nation’s efforts towards achieving the benchmarks outlined in the Vision 2030 National Development Plan and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Twenty years ago, when Digicel switched on advanced mobile technology to Jamaica, we welcomed our duty as a critical national development partner. As we transitioned to a Digital Operator in 2020, we further embraced the opportunity to help drive forward Jamaica’s digital transformation. Our sights are now set on supporting Jamaica’s march towards becoming the Caribbean’s first digitally connected society.

Ensuring that every Jamaican is digitally connected is the motivation that drives all of us at Digicel.

This, along with our Five Promises that wholeheartedly pledge to deliver powerful experiences to our customers 24/7, empowers us to unlock the innate excellence of Jamaicans at home, in the classroom and across industries.
