Megan Tapper is more than just an athlete

-

THE EDITOR, Madam:

I WOULD like Jamaicans to acknowledge Megan Simmonds Tapper for the way she embraces our culture and shows one and all how to be the ideal Jamaican.

When I saw her recently at the Olympics in Japan, I knew of her from a former coach, who told me how generous and hard-working this young lady was. But when she won the bronze medal at the Games in the 100m hurdles, she showed her true colours. She was super excited, showboated and absolutely out of control, and was like a rock for us Jamaicans. I had to turn my head in great laughter.

The way she behaved and appreciated her medal, I felt quite satisfied with her accomplishments more than any other athlete in Japan this year. When people from abroad saw her behaviour, they understood why Jamaica is known as one of the happiest places on planet Earth.

She might be pint-size, but she has the energy of an atomic bomb. The young lady is so vivacious, loving, eloquent, and versatile, with a bubbly, effervescent character. I am proud to know that I am a Jamaican like her. Megan Tapper, your endearing personality will break down barriers not yet conquered.

Megan’s coach at St Andrew High School, Marlon Walker, told me of her warm and friendly disposition, which is lacking in the world today. Her infectious laughter makes me either want to cry or shout.

When I heard she would be on Profile, I had to see her. She is freespirited and genuine, and we, as Jamaicans, must try to develop more beautiful people like Megan Tapper, an accomplished soul.
