We can make science, technology and innovation work for us
EACH NOVEMBER, in recognition of Science and Technology Month, the Scientific Research Council of Jamaica partners with public and private entities in raising awareness on the importance of science and technology. Established in 1960 with a mandate “to serve the productive sector, policymakers and the general public to enable sustainable growth & development in Jamaica”, I commend the Council for its numerous initiatives toward this goal.
As Jamaica’s principal public-sector agency responsible for the coordination, promotion and application of scientific research, the work you do has buoyed the agro-industrial sector and continues to provide numerous business opportunities along the value chain, both locally and abroad. In this COVID-19 crisis, one fact is undeniable – ‘ Science and Technology [is] the heartbeat of National Development’.
Increasingly, we must place our efforts on becoming an innovation-led society by applying science and technology-oriented policies across our public infrastructures. We have a responsibility to fan the flames of innovation and create spaces for their application. In so doing, we improve the quality of life for all Jamaicans and achieve our goals of sustainable development.
As you engage in celebrations, I wish to commend the organisation on its targeted approach and initiatives in stimulating an interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics among our youth. The S&T XXtrodineers JA docuseries and the National Young Inventors and Innovators Competition, aimed at highlighting Jamaican female scientists and creating startups to address local problems, respectively, have been very effective.
I believe that through continued application of multilevel engagement and information activities, we can make science, technology and innovation work for us.
Keep up the good work.
HIS EXCELLENCY THE MOST HON SIR PATRICK ALLEN, ON, GCMG, CD, KSt.J Governor General
