THIS DAY IN OUR PAST
The following events took place on May 9 in the years identified:
1972: Prime Minister Michael Manley announces in the House of Representatives that the National Lottery, in operation for more than three years, is to be abolished. He states that he lottery has “adverse effects upon the youth of the country”, and “we are also of the view that the lottery is not an appropriate instrument of economic development”.
1977: Commonwealth youth leaders end their six-day conference in Ocho Rios with a declaration calling for a greater participation by the youth of the Commonwealth in decisionmaking in their local institutions, and internationally, as a means of achieving “national development, the eradication of colonialism and racism, and the construction of a new social order based on economic and social justice”. The declaration, coming out of the six days of discussions, lists several ways in which Commonwealth youth can participate in the social and economic development of their countries as well as internationally.
1979: TumbleWind, piloted by apprentice Aaron Taylor for Trainer George Kinghorne, comes home a runaway winner of the “E” Class mile and quarter race for the Eggie Sutherland Memorial Cup, feature event at Caymanas Park.
2001: Twenty-five teachers from across the parish of St Catherine are honoured for their dedication to education at a special Teachers’ Day function put on by The Gleaner Company Limited at the Alhambra Inn in Kingston. Among them are principals from primary, all-age, and high schools in the parish, which is selected by The Gleaner as part of its annual efforts to recognise teachers.
