The following events took place on May 9 in the years identified:

1972: Prime Minister Michael Manley announces in the House of Representa­tives that the National Lottery, in operation for more than three years, is to be abolished. He states that he lottery has “adverse effects upon the youth of the country”, and “we are also of the view that the lottery is not an appropriat­e instrument of economic developmen­t”.

1977: Commonweal­th youth leaders end their six-day conference in Ocho Rios with a declaratio­n calling for a greater participat­ion by the youth of the Commonweal­th in decisionma­king in their local institutio­ns, and internatio­nally, as a means of achieving “national developmen­t, the eradicatio­n of colonialis­m and racism, and the constructi­on of a new social order based on economic and social justice”. The declaratio­n, coming out of the six days of discussion­s, lists several ways in which Commonweal­th youth can participat­e in the social and economic developmen­t of their countries as well as internatio­nally.

1979: TumbleWind, piloted by apprentice Aaron Taylor for Trainer George Kinghorne, comes home a runaway winner of the “E” Class mile and quarter race for the Eggie Sutherland Memorial Cup, feature event at Caymanas Park.

2001: Twenty-five teachers from across the parish of St Catherine are honoured for their dedication to education at a special Teachers’ Day function put on by The Gleaner Company Limited at the Alhambra Inn in Kingston. Among them are principals from primary, all-age, and high schools in the parish, which is selected by The Gleaner as part of its annual efforts to recognise teachers.
