Ashley Wong helps others by ‘Just Mommying’
‘I wanted to share my experiences on this motherhood journey, so that other moms would feel less alone.
ASHLEY WONG considers motherhood to be an honour that she will never take for granted. Set on sharing stories that would help others like her on their journey, she created a safe space, called Just Mommying Ja.
“I wanted to share my experiences on this motherhood journey, so that other moms would feel less alone. No matter what new challenge you’re facing as a mom, I guarantee [that] other moms are facing it too; and having a community to share, vent, get advice and support can make a world of a difference,” she explained.
Becoming a mom was something Wong had dreamed about, from high school. “I used to always say I wanted to have four children and I wanted to be a stayat-home mom; that has certainly changed now,” she reflected, with a laugh. When she found out that she was going to be a mother, she was overcome with joy and gratitude, elated that one of her heart’s deepest desires had been fulfilled.
But it was no walk in the park. Both of her children had colic and would cry incessantly. She and her husband would try just about anything to provide comfort, including rocking and singing. Nothing she did seemed to help.
“Unfortunately, in most cases, colic is something they just have to grow out of once their digestive systems become more developed. The constant crying was very hard to deal with, and the lack of sleep made me very irritable at times.” Not having the freedom to get up and go also brought the reality of motherhood to the forefront, further encouraging her to start the conversation.
Since launching in September 2020, moms have openly engaged in discussions surrounding autism, miscarriages, hyperemesis gravidarum, pregnancy-associated breast cancer, homeschooling, step-parenting, and dating with a child. “The reception so far has been amazing. Persons love and appreciate how honest, open, and relatable my guests have been in sharing their stories,” she said.
Another main feature of the channel is the ‘Issy’s Corner’ series. There, Wong shares creative activities with her three-year-old daughter.
The vlogger believes that putting out consistent content was an important factor in keeping her audience’s interest. The restrictions of COVID-19 threatened to rain on this Mommy’s parade, but she remained determined to shed more light on the maternal challenges.
“Motherhood is beautiful, but it is also very hard, and it isn’t a journey that we were meant to do by ourselves. Having a community and support is so very important,” she highlighted.
Relying on her village to fill the gaps in areas where she needed assistance, she advises other mothers to ask for help. They should find their village and give themselves grace.
