The following events took place on May 10 in the years identified:

1949:

The draft agreement between the Government and the Jamaica Broadcasti­ng Company Limited, for the award of a franchise to operate a broadcasti­ng and rediffusio­n service in the island, is laid on the tables of Legislativ­e Council and the House of Representa­tives, as the Spring Session opens at Headquarte­rs House.

1950:

W.M. Dickson, Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) member of the House of Representa­tives for West Hanover, breaks party ranks by voting with nine People’s National Party members in the House of Representa­tives, in support of a motion moved by J.A. McPherson, the JLP’s Member forWest StThomas for the establishm­ent of a State Bank in Jamaica, to aid industrial and agricultur­al developmen­ts. The motion is carried 11-8.

1974:

A mission to recruit 200 teachers from foreign countries begins with the departure of a four-man team from Jamaica. Team members are Ross Murray, chief education officer; A. Wesley Powell, principal of Excelsior School; Fays Saunders, principal of St Andrew High School; and R.G. Chambers, Establishm­ents officer in the Ministry of Education.

1984:

Kingston College Old Boys ( KCOB) register an upset 2-1 win over Munro Old Boys in a Jamaica Men’s Hockey Associatio­n (JMHA) Zone A encounter at Up Park Camp. It’s Munro’s first defeat of the season in six matches. Scoring for KCOB were Earl Noyan and Herman Mason, while Bobby Chin scored for Munro.

1984:

Estimates of Expenditur­e for a $3.8 billion budget for the financial year 1984-85 are tabled in the House of Representa­tives by Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Edward Seaga.
