St Ann MC CEO cleared in car-charging port saga
St Ann Municipal Corporation CEO Rovel Morris has been cleared by the Services Commission of any wrongdoing in the case involving the installation of a car-charging port at its offices for use by former Mayor Michael Belnavis.
The Integrity Commission had recommended in January that Morris be sanctioned for authorising the installation, saying that because this was in contravention of the policy as the port was for Belnavis’ personal use. It also noted that no permission was granted by the permanent secretary in the Ministry of Local Government for its installation.
On Thursday, Morris told The Gleaner that the matter was settled.
“I’m feeling relieved, especially because of public perception, if you understand. Public perception would have it that you’re corrupt, etc,,” Morris told The Gleaner.
The Integrity Commission had also accused Belnavis of abusing his office.
Following public outrage, the former mayor repaid the $78,000 cost for the installation and the port was reportedly removed.
Morris said that measures have been put in place to prevent a recurrence.
