THIS DAY IN OUR PAST
The following events took place on May 14 in the years identified:
1952: His Excellency the Governor Sir Hugh Foot meets with representatives of the Jamaica Agricultural Society and Minister of Agriculture Isaac Barrant, for an informal conference on the Praedial Larceny Prevention Law. The discussion centred around arrangement for launching the campaign against Praedial Larceny under the Law and the need for the fullest support of the farmers in the areas in which the law is operating.
1970: Head and administrator of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church in the United States, Archimandrite Laike M. Mandefro, arrives in Jamaica to establish a branch of the church. He is accompanied by Deacon Collin R. Tomlin and Deacon Gebre Hiwot. A crowd of about 300 persons, most of them dressed in Rastafarian wear, some waving Ethiopian flags, gather at the Palisadoes Airport to welcome the archimandrite. As the airplane touches down, the crowd, which throngs the waving gallery, sings hymns.
